Honoring the Legacy. Building the Future.

Hulen’s heritage is built on decades of oilfield experience, entrepreneurial vision, and a commitment to doing business with integrity. Today, that foundation continues through an experienced team combining practical operating knowledge with modern technical expertise to identify opportunities, develop resources, and build for the future.

Our history

A Legacy Beyond the Wells

Hulen’s history traces back to humble beginnings in Garber, Oklahoma, and the contributions of three men whose distinct strengths helped shape the company’s development.

The Oilman

Hulen H. “Tobe” Pruitt

Tobe built his career from the oilfield up, gaining years of hands-on experience with Halliburton and later Sinclair. His knowledge of drilling, production, and field operations provided the foundation for the family’s entry into independent oil and gas development.

Respected for his work ethic, sound judgment, and integrity, Tobe established a standard of character and practical excellence that would influence the family’s business endeavors for decades.

The Visionary

Larry Hulen Pruitt

Tobe’s son Larry recognized the opportunity to turn that experience into an independent oil and gas business. With a natural talent for finance, raising capital, and identifying opportunities, Larry encouraged his father to pursue drilling and production on their own.

In 1976, they established L&T Oil and Gas and began drilling their own wells. Tobe’s operating expertise and Larry’s financial vision proved a successful combination, establishing a foundation of experience, relationships, and opportunity that would extend well beyond their early ventures.

The Entrepreneur

Randy P. Pruitt

Randy began his oilfield career at age 16, working as a roughneck on the family’s drilling rigs. Learning from his father and older brother, he developed an understanding of both the technical and business sides of the industry.

Determined to forge his own path, Randy traveled to Kuwait to work as an oil-well firefighter. Upon returning to Oklahoma, he secured his own financing and began drilling wells independently. He later expanded drilling and operating activities under the Hulen name, with Tobe continuing to share his knowledge and guidance.

Over decades in the industry, Randy has developed an extensive practical understanding of drilling, completions, production, and the challenges of operating complex wells. His entrepreneurial approach combines that hands-on experience with sound business judgment, long-term planning, and a strong sense of responsibility for the capital entrusted to Hulen.

An experienced operator who continues to embrace new ideas, Randy values surrounding himself with talented people, encouraging different perspectives, and embracing new technologies where they can improve the business. He remains deeply grateful to his father and brother, recognizing that their knowledge, vision, and guidance were instrumental in his success.

Together, Tobe, Larry, and Randy represent Hulen’s founding heritage, each bringing distinct strengths that continue to influence the company today.

Our principles

The Principles That Endure

Beyond the wells drilled and the businesses established, Hulen’s legacy is reflected in the character of the people behind them and the relationships they have built.

Honor. Integrity. Generosity.

These principles, exemplified by Tobe and carried forward through Randy’s leadership, remain central to Hulen’s approach to business. They are reflected in the company’s commitment to honoring its obligations, treating people fairly, exercising sound judgment, and building lasting relationships with employees, landowners, investors, and industry partners.

Today

Building on the Foundation

Today, Hulen continues that tradition through a team bringing together expertise in subsurface disciplines—including geology, petrophysics, and geophysics—alongside engineering, land, finance, and field operations. The company also draws on experienced consultants and industry partners.

Together, they combine decades of practical oilfield knowledge with modern technical and economic analysis, an approach that supports informed investment decisions, responsible operations, and the pursuit of new opportunities through acquisitions, drilling, redevelopment, and strategic partnerships.

As Hulen looks toward the future, its commitment remains rooted in the principles that shaped its beginnings: integrity, sound judgment, entrepreneurial initiative, and enduring relationships.

The wells are part of Hulen’s history. The people and principles behind them are its legacy.
